What Do Most People Think Of When They Hear The Words Punk Rock Some

What do most people think of when they hear the words Punk Rock? Some people may think of delinquents sporting dyed hair, leather jackets, and chains. Although this may be true among some punk rock enthusiasts, there is much more to punk music and culture. Punk rock is believed to have originated in Great Britain and other parts of Europe. Although there are no exact dates on punk's creation, it is believed to have started in the late 60's or early 70's. Punk rock is a relatively new music trend but it has already created some well-known bands such as "The Sex Pistols", "NoFx", and "Green Day". Punk music was originally created by bands to help them express their feelings about the corrupted governments and other social problems in Europe. This music is characterized by it's high paced beat and sometimes offensive lyrics. To be punk rock it has to be adrenaline packed and in your face. The music used is usually very simple with extremely fast drumbeats and five chord guitar rifts. Of course there are many talented artists that have contributed more elaborate tunes, but for the most part they are kept simple. Many people associate this type of music with anarchists and trouble makers because of it's underground nature, but it does have an appeal among normal young adults. Punk has gone from it's primitive days of protesting the government to more excepted topics such as relationships and everyday events. The music is still sometimes rebellious, but it is always fun. Many bands have turned to humor for inspiration for their songs, which has created many bands that are very comical. Classical and Country music fans may never accept Punk Rock as real music because of it's high speed and seemingly immature lyrics, but Punk will always have it's faithful audience. Punk Rock attracts many unique individuals and has become an anthem for unaccepted groups such as skateboarders. Skateboarding and Punk Rock have been unaccepted by society for many years, but are starting to become more accepted thanks to movies and television. Many punk bands have become so popular that they have appeared on movies and TV. One such band is The Ramones. The Ramones are an older band that has made appearances on many movies and radio shows. Even with society starting to accept punk rock more, many punk enthusiasts believe that punk music is only punk when it is played to a bunch of local kids in a run down dance hall.

Examples of Bad Engineering in From the Earth to the Moon R.U.R. Metropolis & Transatlantic Tunnel essays

Examples of Bad Engineering in From the Earth to the Moon R.U.R. Metropolis & Transatlantic Tunnel essays OUTLINE According to H. Bruce Franklin, science fiction is "the only literature capable of exploring the macro-history of our species. . . in a cosmic context" (Science Fiction: The Early History, Internet) which suggests that man's place in the universe is dependent upon rock-solid scientific investigation and exploration. But as a literary/cinematic genre, science fiction can and often does contain inventions, ideas and theories based on pure speculation and pseudo-science. Some of the devices and instruments featured in many popular science fiction novels and films are in essence conceived through bad engineering, meaning that these devices and instruments are not practical nor possible according to present scientific knowledge. Out of all the novels and films written and produced within the last one hundred and fifty years, four stand out for their use of bad engineeringJules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon (1865), R.U.R. by Karel Capek (1921), Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1926) and Maurice Elvey's In the 1865 science fiction "classic" From the Earth to the Moon, Jules Verne, the author of other sci-fi novels such as Journey to the Center of the Earth and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, expresses his admiration for all things American, especially their ingenuity and desire for exploration. In this novel, the so-called "daredevil" Michel Ardan comes up with the fabulous idea of sending a man to the moon via a spaceship that is to be "launched" from the barrel of a huge gun. This spaceship is to be made of aluminum, and to launch their "shot" at the proper angle, the men involved in this scheme choose a site in Florida near the present-day Cape Canaveral. As a preparatory experiment, Verne's "astronauts" send a cat and a squirrel into space first and then plan to ...

Professional Development Analysis Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Professional Development Analysis - Assignment Example The researcher states that a professionally qualified engineer must possess all the necessary qualifications and the relevant experience in order to become a successful engineer. To assist in this, the government of U.K has allotted a separate body that deals with professional engineers. The levels of professional qualification differ from one university to another. The major reason for such changes is the current requirement of the industries and the changing trend in the field of engineering. All these factors contribute to the decrease in the number of students who opt for technical courses and courses related to science. Though the numbers of engineering courses are increasing, courses like mechanical and manufacturing engineering continue to draw a reasonable number of people. Since the level of qualification differs based on the field of engineering, the requirements also differ. The level of professional qualification certainly depend on the field of engineering and hence the students must make up their mind according to the current needs and make sure they select a field in which they can obtain the required level of qualification. The various levels of diploma, Pre University, vocational courses, graduate, and postgraduate courses help the students to obtain the highest level of qualification, so as to prepare themselves for a challenging career. Though the branches of engineering are similar to some extent, mechanical and manufacturing engineering are different in their technical aspects. Due to this reason, the students who prefer these streams must ensure that they get qualified and equally experienced to evolve into a professionally qualified engineer. Apart from these factors, the selection of courses depends on the university in which the student studies. As the numbers of colleges in the UK are increasing considerably, it is the responsibility of the students to select a university which best suits their needs. The field of mechanical and manufa cturing engineering offers a wide variety of choice to the students from which they can take up a course that specializes in this field. The levels of professional qualification include a diploma, a bachelor degree, and a post-graduate degree.

Direct-to-Customer Drug Advertising Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Direct-to-Customer Drug Advertising - Essay Example But United States of America allows direct-to-customer drug advertisement and some people appreciate this policy. In this paper categorical imperative will be used to solve this dilemma of drug advertisement. We will argue through Kant’s deontological approach that drug advertisement directed to the end users is not ethical. Why Direct-to-Customer Drug Advertising is unethical? Deontological ethics emphasize on the moral duties of a person irrespective of the consequences of an action (Stanford Encyclopedia, 1). An act, therefore, is ethical or good only if it is morally right. An act cannot be ethically justified only by the consequences it follows because wrong actions (like lying) can sometimes lead to good consequences. Therefore deontologists argue that rules or duties make an action ethical, and not the consequences of those actions. Drug advertisement is not morally right because it violates the moral rule that one should act in a way in which one wants to be treated. D rug advertisement is not something desirable for a person who has limited knowledge of medical sciences. I am simply arguing against customer directed drug advertisement because I would not want to expose myself to such advertisement that can harm my health. Drug advertisement will only have limited information and they will entice a person to take self medication. The moral principle that should guide our behavior tells us that drug advertisement should be banned irrespective of the good and bad consequences it has to offer. Categorical imperative is a moral philosophy given by Immanuel Kant. Categorical imperative calls for behaving in a manner that would one be willing to make a general universal principle (Kant, 30). A person, according to Kant, should act according to his or her moral duties and should not take into account the possible consequences of an action. Ethical actions should be based on moral principles rather than ‘good’ consequences. Direct-to-customer drug advertisement is similar to lying in many ways. No one would like to be on the receiving end of lying therefore it can be termed as an unethical behavior. In advertisement no company can tell everything about a drug therefore there will be chances of misunderstanding. Most of the people are not familiar with the medical terms therefore they may perceive it differently. It will be similar to concealing and therefore cannot be termed as an ethical behavior. No matter what are the consequences of drug advertisement to consum ers, the act itself is not moral therefore it cannot be allowed. It is also important to understand that drug marketing can hurt children considerably. The main principle of categorical imperative calls for acting in a way so as you, by will, allow that act to become universally applicable. No one would like their children to see drug advertisements at homes therefore it is not justified morally to legalize customer directed drug marketing. There are also people who argue that it is in the best interest of the society that customer directed drug advertisements should be allowed all over the world. Their arguments stem from the sheer need of the ordinary people who are not able to go to doctors. It will allow them to treat themselves in a better way and avoid high costs of doctors. The argument is of utilitarianist nature that argues maximum good for the majority of population (Bentham, Chapter 1). This argument does not strengthen the case of customer directed

Social Psychology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Social Psychology - Essay Example This paper focuses on social psychology as a branch of psychology. As a branch of psychology, social psychology concerns itself with the understanding of individual’s mental behaviors, functions and processes within a social context (Vala and Costa-Lopes, 2012). Myers and his co-authors (2010) also define social psychology as the scientific field that aims at understanding the causes and nature of the behavior of an individual in social situations or contexts. Therefore, it looks at the behavior of an individual as influenced by the social context and other people around where this takes place. In other words, social psychology can be described as a discipline that employs scientific methods in understanding and explaining how the feeling, behavior, and thought of an individual are influenced by the implied, imagined, or actual presence of other people in a particular context, or different situations (Letitia, et al., 2005). While the discipline also relates with sociology by looking on group factors such as socio-economic class and race, it relates to psychology in the sense that it looks at these factors by focusing on an individual. The discipline focuses on a broad range of social topics such as social perception, non-verbal behavior, prejudice, conformity, leadership, aggression, and group behavior, among others (Funder and Krueger, 2004). Apart from looking at the social influences, this discipline also looks at the issues to do with social interaction and social perception, all of which are essential in understanding an individual’s behavior within a social context (Rogers, 2011). Like other disciplines, social psychology has developed over years to become an acceptable and scientific field of study and practice around the world. While the influences of social psychology can be traced to early centuries, it started to develop as a discipline in the wake of the twentieth century (Vala and Costa-Lopes, 2012). The earliest influences of this d iscipline came from such philosophers as Aristotle and Plato. Aristotle held the belief that human beings are naturally sociable creatures, a feature that allows them to live together. His view was considered as an individual-centered approach because it considers an individual essential in a social context. On his part, Plato believed that the state was critical in controlling individuals and encouraging social responsibility through social situations and contexts. Plato’s view came to be known as the socio-centered approach (Letitia et al, 2005). In the 1800s, there was the introduction of social psychology concepts such as social facilitation and social loafing. This discipline developed further at the dawn of the twentieth century when texts in the field started to emerge, the most notable text being â€Å"An Introduction to Social Psychology,† which McDougall wrote in 1908. The writing of texts in the field in subsequent years greatly contributed to the developmen t of this discipline (Myers, et al., 2010). The period after the Second World War is credited for the substantial development of social psychology and research in social psychology. The horrors of the war led several researchers to develop interest in researching various social psychology topics such as conformity and social influence (Vala and Costa-Lopes, 2012). Some of the research focused on how individual behaviors and attitudes are shaped by social context, how they are formed, and how they can be measured in order to ascertain if change

A Look At Spirituality And Health

A Look At Spirituality And Health Spirituality and health are two fields that are closely related but peoples in a way such that ones spirituality in some ways will tend to affect their healths welfare. Some medical facts have shown that holy or spiritual people show fewer human destructive behaviors such as taking of alcohol, committing suicide or drug abuse. They suffer less stress and always live comfortably. Most of the religious practices actually make one feel relaxed and cheerful. This may entail singing and sharing spiritual ideas with others. This subsequently reduces the chances of one acquiring stress related ailments hence an improved health (Mieler, 2005). Majoring on a clinical context, particular psychologists pioneered some work in the area of psychology and spirituality. One of them who goes by the name Alfred Adler formerly studied medicine and supported the allegations that a religious belief system normally supports a healthy life style that may result to healthy outcomes referring to the clinical context. Adlers Psychology strives for the holistic outcomes. Consequently this develops a kind of life-style that tends to reinforce a healthy relationship. These given relationships will then promote a good health referring to the clinical context for both the care giver and the patient. To most people spirituality is believed to be powerful and an important source of strength. This is because when they are faced with tough situations in their life such as health problems, their beliefs in God and practices assist them to overcome spirit of helplessness. This will eventually leads to achieving a sense of control. Spirituality can improves the medical state of human being.   Some patients in hospital from religious background mostly recover faster from their mental disorder compared to those who are not religious. Religious people are always hopeful hence are good in dealing with various challenges they face in life no matter how stressing they are. Unspiritual people most of the times give up very fast hence they may end up committing suicide. Most spiritual families are good in bringing up children healthier ways compared to unspiritual families. Most parents who are unspiritual engage their children in irresponsible behaviors such as taking alcohol. Taking of alcohol affect peoples health since it causes some liver disorders for instance liver cirrhosis that may end up costing them their lives. Many people who are unspiritual are fond of taking toxic substances such cigarette which contains chemical called nicotine. Spiritual people avoid taking of substances such as alcohol and cigarette hence they have a healthier life. Once spiritual people are role models of young people in the society they will copy them and therefore stay free from diseases brought about by of toxic substances.   Also young religious people dont involve themselves in irresponsible sexual behaviors such as fornication hence they cant get some sexual associated diseases such HIV/AIDS that may affect their health negatively. Staying healthy is very important all human beings.   Good health helps in staying fit and avoid some diseases and sicknesses. Healthy people are usually active and are able to carry out their daily activities. Health does not only increase youth body performance but still increases confidence.   Healthy people increase their mental activities and are able to grasp things very fast since they develop a good wit. Staying healthy makes people to complete their duties in place of work and their goals in life. Maintaining good health keeps one away from psychological problems such as stress. It also reduces chances of being depressed by small things in life. Good healthy increases self-esteems. Taking alcohol and cigarette can cause ill healthy which can expose one to some psychological torture, but quitting this can promote your healthy. Healthier people live longer since all their organs are functioning properly. Spirituality and health are related in various way, as mentioned above those people who are spiritual are likely to cope with various situations in their life that can pose a threat to their health. Spiritual people share various things in common such as positive beliefs; strength and comfort gained from their religion, prayers and meditation play a great role in healing and sense of well being. Spiritual health mighty not cure illness, but it may help one feel better, prevent various health problems and help one to cope with sickness and stress hence improve human health.   Religious practices reduce cases of blood pressure, improve mood, reduces the healing period and improved blood circulation are various benefits that one is exposed to due to religious practices. Staying healthy requires one to be committed in taking good food and doing various exercises so as to stay fit. Taking balance diet is one way of keeping your body healthy. Exercise for instance running and jogging help in burning excess fat that can cause blockage of arteries and cause heart failure and stroke. It is also recommendable to consult a physician for proper dietary recommendations. Staying free from various drugs such as bhang and nicotine can still improve healthy.   One chief purpose of Christian in life is to promote and grow spiritually each day so as to reflect love and righteousness of God in their life and that of the whole community. There are various methods that can be used to promote spirituality for instance praying. Concern for others is a vital part of Christian life; one should keep on praying for them. Some prayer items should include praying for good health, marital problems and other challenges that face them in life.   Another method of promoting spirituality is by reading scripture. This can be achieved through exercising topical bible study in which one write down topics to study within a particular week.   While prayer and bible study are essential exercise, one should not forget to attend services in the church and fellowship with other Christians. Sharing witnesses or testimonies, encouraging each other and preaching to one another can also be used to promote spirituality.   Furthermore it is important to find opportunities to serve others and influence them with Gods love and holiness. These include visiting orphans or mentally handicapped people. Charity walks and doing volunteer work can also be used to promote spirituality among Christians. Most Christians promote their spirituality through repenting daily of their sinful ways and make a change for better. They should always focus to be surrounded by positivity and abandon negativity in their life. Reading inspirational books, meditation of Gods word, obeying Christ by doing as he commands and allowing their spirit grows through learning more of his truth can also be methods of promoting spirituality  (Orchard, 2001). Many medical schools have included spiritual teaching in their curricula. However, the role that a doctor should play in guiding and assisting patients in spiritual matter remains a controversial. Although there appear to be growing belief in connection between spirituality and health, scientists in this field feels that a research should be carried out to determine this connection, a better understanding where there is this connection, and how it works.

Decision-Making Model Essay -- essays research papers

Decision-Making Model Analysis Paper   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Throughout this paper, the values of the Six Thinking Hats will be discussed and the meanings behind the Six Hats. Six Thinking Hats’ is â€Å"used to look at decisions from a number of important perspectives. This forces you to move outside your habitual thinking style, and helps you to get a more rounded view of a situation (de Bono, 1985)†. There are five values behind the Six Thinking Hats. They are role-playing, attention direction, convenience, possible basis in brain chemistry, and rules of the game. Decision-making can be difficult, but these are decisions that are made after all the information has been provided beforehand. White Hat   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬ White hat is neutral and objective. The white hat is concerned with objective facts and figures (de Bono, 1985)†. The purpose of the white hat is to focus on the data available. Look at the information given and see what can be learned from it. The person requesting the information should use focusing questions in order to obtain information or information gaps. White hat thinking is a discipline and a direction. The thinker has to strive to be more neutral and objective in the presentation of the information. Red Hat   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬ Red hat suggests anger (seeing red), rage and emotions. The red hat gives the emotional view (de Bono, 1985)†. When a thinker is using the red hat there should never be any attempt to justify the feelings or to provide a logical basis for them. The purpose of the red hat is to look at problems using intuition, gut reaction, and emotion. With the red hat, this allows the thinker to say; â€Å"This is how I feel about the matter†. Black Hat   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬ Black is gloomy and negative. The black hat covers the negative aspects – why it cannot be done (de Bono, 1985)†. With the black hat all the bad points of a decision has to be taken into consideration. This is the hat where the weak points are looked at my closely. This is the time when contingency plans are prepared and placed into order. The black hat points out risks, dangers, or faults in a design. The black hat is not argument, it is just an objective attempt to put negative elements on the table. Yellow Hat   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬ Yellow hat is sunny and positive. The yellow hat is optimistic and covers hope... ...rpose of the different color hats is so that with each hat is up for discussion then decisions can be made at that point. For us to determine who will speak first, if you are wearing that hat color that we are discussing then that person will have the option to speak first regarding there opinion. If there are more than one person with that color on, then the person who has more red, or black or yellow etc. on then he or she goes first. Beside each hat the decision that we came up with as a group will be written down. Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The purpose of the six thinking hats is allowing a thinker to deal with one thing at a time. Instead of having to take care of emotions, logic, information, hope and creativity all at the same time. Being able to deal with them separately helps to come up with a more successful outcome. When thinking is clear and simple, it becomes more enjoyable and more effective. References De Bono, E., Six Thinking Hats. (1985) MICA Management Resources, Inc. Toronto, Ontario Mind Tools. Life Choices and Consequences

My Grandfather always said to me â€Å" s3 wo si as3 Ny3 wo d3 a 3h) na wo tafiri† –â€Å"Even if you don’t like the taste in your mouth that is where you will always lick† The diversity of life impinges on us to make a choice in every single decision. Whatever you have done in your life and whatever you will do is simple a bundle of choices you have made or will make. And every single one of these choices serves as a foundation for another choice. But the more fascinating thing about choices is that every single one of our choices reduces the probability of options that are readily available to us .And this is extremely important because the surprising number of us do not realized that all that we are and everything we have are the results of choices . We are in control of our choices and thus our life’s direction and destiny. Our choices and our life go hand in hand . the life you are living is simply a cumulative series of choices you have made. We have gotten used to making choices that we scarcely think of it as the means that unfolds our life before our eyes. Choices are about yielding and resisting. They are about reflections and impulsiveness. They are about the present and future and it is a yes and no affair and a now later business but whatever it is the laws of living demands that we make one in every circumstance in other to live. But every single choice we make comes along with a shadow . This shadow is generally referred as consequence . It is very easy in the choice making decision to conjure our best planning skills to navigate the maze of options that covers the path to wherever we want to go and whatever we want to achieve. However, we scarcely make provisions for dealing with the consequences of our choices .And so consequences of our choices have become more or less a headache in society. More often than not, the consequences of our choices open our eyes to the glitter of all the other options we pushed asi de. And then we start to think that the choices we made were poor ones . Sometimes we feel like turning back the clock and rewinding the tape in other to make a better choice. Truth is, it does not matter how hard or how badly you want to change the choice. A choice made is a choice made. The best that you can do about it is to develop a positive attitude about it and face the consequences. The bottom line is this: regardless of the consequences that we are going through now, we are all trying to accomplish increasingly more out of the choices we made with increasingly less resources –whether these resources are money, time, focus or energy. The challenge is not that we do not make rational choices, rather, our refusal to focus and work hard at the choices we have made, make those options we left behind glitter like the twinkling stars. Instead of constantly looking over your shoulder at the glittering options you left behind, your best bet is to live positively with your choi ces and look towards the future .Looking back means you are dwelling on the past instead of living in the present and being stuck in the past does not help you make any better choices in the future. We can all look at our circumstances and point out instances where different choices could have given us a different way of life . But it only sounds easy in words. In action, they are difficult . For the surprising majority of us, when the consequences of our choices rear its ugly head, we respond in a very predictable way. We turn in the opposite direction and try to outrun it .The only problem is that, before long the consequences catches up with us. And so instead of outrunning the consequences, we actually run into it , maximizing our exposure to it. Or like we say,† Challenges and problems compound when we ignore them , and we end up being exposed to something longer and or worse than what might have been. Our best bet is to wait for the consequences to come right at us and a s it arrives, we must charge directly into them. By charging at the consequences of our choices, we run straight through it, which minimizes the amount of negative effect we experience .And why not, in life most of the brilliant options are about doing the hard things you know you should do, even when you do not feel like doing them, but doing as early on as possible. As long as we live, we are going to make a lot of choices. And if we do not want negative consequences, then we have to think about and evaluate our choices differently than we have been doing. It is about giving a lot of forethought to the consequences of the choices we are faced with. And it is about being ready to deal positively with whatever consequences that materializes out of the choices we make.

I Am My Mothers Daughter Professor Ramos Blog

I Am My Mothers Daughter Nick White English 101 Prof. Ramos I am my Mothers Daughter Everyone who reads â€Å"Never Marry a Mexican† is very quick to look down on the main character Clemencia for her choices but I dont think it’s that easy. I think that she became who she was taught to be and who she learned to be. This could be from her parents, her siblings or maybe even a trusted teacher. This girl did go through some pretty traumatic stuff when she was younger so it is no surprise that she became the woman she became. From a young age Clemencia’s mother told her â€Å"never marry a mexican† because she did and he was very traditional. He was born and raised in Mexico while she was born and raised in the United States but in a mexican household. Even though they were both mexican and taught mexican culture they were taught it differently. From day one the relationship was not sound, they would always feel like the other ones beliefs were wrong so to try and protect her daughter she just told her to never marry a mexican so she wouldnt have to deal with the same struggle. Clemencia was raised being told to basically abandon her culture and just go for a rich white guy to support her. Her mother was also un loyal to her husband so again Clemencia is learning these negative things from her mother which will stick with her her whole life. Even worse, her mother cheated on her husband while he was sick and in the hospital which would have a very strong impact on Clemencia as she had alway s connected with her father more than her mother so after hearing what her mother did it drove a wedge even farther in the family. Then to add insult to injury the mom then married and children with the man she was having an affair with. What mother could put her children through all that? Now saying her mother made her the way she is isnt fair because Clemencia does acknowledge the fact that what she is doing is wrong but she also says that she saw what marriage did nothing for her mother and father so why does she need to get married? Her mother did love and care for Clemencia and her siblings but her mother also taught her terrible things and those terrible things followed clemencia throughout her whole life. It would be unfair to put all the blame on the mother though because in the book Clemencia keeps dating men that are married but she couldnt do that if married men didnt go looking for new woman. We usually blame women for being the homewrecker and ruining the relationship but what about the man who had an equal part in bringing that girl into all this? In the story the main male character is named Drew and he was married but also clemencias teacher. The two of them ended up dating and on the day of drew’s child being born drew was back at home with Clemencia in Drews bed. This is almost exactly what Clemencias mother did to her husband, she left him in his time of need to be with someone else. Drew does actually eventually end up leaving his wifr and taking the kid after actually introducing Clemencia to his wife to really hit home that their dirt bags. None of this would have happened if Clemencia never got together with Drew but Drew made a conscious effort to keep pursuin g Clemencia and to keep their relationship a secret from his wife so its both their fault not just her. Maybe there is just some thrill they got sneaking around that made them keep going, they knew it was wrong but the rush they got from trying to hide it was more important. It’s like skydiving or surfing, it’s scary, fun and dangerous because at any moment the whole thing could go wrong and everything comes crumbling down around them. So maybe this whole thing wasnt love it was just chasing the forbidden fruit, it was taking the thing you’re not supposed to have just because you can. So can you really blame them? Everyone has taken a cookie out of the cookie jar without asking. Everyone is so quick to blame the girl for cheating but so many other factors play into it all. I personally find Clemencia to be a very deep and complex character who could easily be overlooked once you finish the story. But she allows us to look at ourselves and society as a whole and really see how we view the roles and dynamics of men vs women.

Nerdy Proud Professor Ramos Blog

Nerdy Proud For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a scientist. When I was five years old, I was obsessed with the movie Jurassic Park and had a dinosaur themed birthday party because I was fascinated with paleontology. I thought it was amazing how people could find bones of animals that lived millions of years ago and figure out what species they were, how they interacted with other animals, what they ate, etc. At eleven years old, I read the Kane Chronicles series, which was about two siblings (Carter and Sadie Kane) who discover that the gods and goddesses of Egypt were real, they were descendants of pharaohs, and could do magic. After reading those books, I immediately started researching ancient Egypt and thought studying that awesome culture would be an amazing job. Finally at twelve years old, I found my calling: Astrophysics. I hardly remember anything that happened during summer vacation in 2012 but the one memory I will never forget is when my dad suggested that we go stargazing. My best friend from childhood had come to house for a sleepover and we were bored by the time it was evening so my dad suggested that we look for satellites. â€Å"You can see satellites?!†, I asked because I did not know anything about satellites and space at the time. My dad laughed and said â€Å"Of course† then we went to backyard. He explained that satellites will look like a regular star but it will move across the sky so we waited and watched the stars. I remember thinking about how pretty the stars looked and how it was cool that they unintentionally made constellations like the Big Dipper then I heard my dad say, â€Å"I see one!!!†. My friend and I looked up and found the satellite my dad was looking at. Sure enough it looked exactly like a moving star and all I could think was â€Å"Humans are a mazing.† It took millions of years for humans to evolve into what we are and we were able to develop a need for knowledge. That need drove us to building satellites and rovers so that we could explore the infinite universe and I immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of that. The next day my friend went home and I started watching all of the space documentaries on Netflix. The things that exist in this universe are wild. There are black holes that somehow have enough gravity to rip up stars, bend light, and keep an entire galaxy from breaking up. Stars can get the element Hydrogen and create Helium, Beryllium, Carbon, and the other elements from the periodic table just from that element. Also, all the stars that we see in the night sky could have their own solar systems with their planets that could have intelligent life form. All in all it was amazing that in the billions of years that it took for the universe to form, I somehow came to be and I realized that I wanted my life to be dedicated to astronomy. I didn’t really talk about my astronomy passion during middle school with my friends but once I reached high school, I was a little more open about it; the people I hung out with did not care for that. I remember one time I was talking about this article I read about the elements used in fireworks and when I was done, they all stared at me blankly and said, â€Å"You’re such a nerd.† Looking back, I should not have been offended because what’s wrong with being a nerd? Nothing but at the time, I decided to not be vocal about those things. Of course, it wasn’t everyone that made fun of my passions. My mom, for example, had always loved science since she was a kid so she was ecstatic when I started showing interest in astronomy and encouraged me to keep reading. My dad was supportive in a different way; when I was ten years old, I wasn’t reading as much because I just didn’t know what else to read besides kids books like Junie B. Jones. My dad noticed so he went out and bought me two young adult novels. My favorite book out of the two was The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, which was about an eleven year old girl in the 1800’s who was inspired by her grandfather to be a naturalist. How could I not love it? It was relatable because it was about a girl who fell in love with science. It was also informational because it was set in the 1800’s so I was able to learn what it was like to live in that time period. Unfortunately I lost the book years ago but my dad told me that there was another r eason behind buying me those books. A couple months ago, we were sitting in his apartment and at some point, I asked him if he remembered buying me those novels. â€Å"I remember†, He said then ran his hand through his hair and asked, â€Å"Do you know the reason why I bought you them?†. I nodded and replied, â€Å"Yeah, you wanted me to read on a higher level.† â€Å"That was one reason†, he said with a smile, â€Å"I also made sure that I got books that were about women doing things besides being a housewife and a mom. I wanted you to know that you can be anything.† Now I don’t really cry a lot but I was very close to shedding tears that day. After that conversation, I thought â€Å"SCREW WHAT PEOPLE THINK!†. I knew what career I wanted and I knew how to get it so why did it matter what a few people thought of it? Once I achieve my dream of working at NASA, I will be able to do what I’ve wanted to do since I was twelve years old: study the physics of the cosmos. Sometimes I do doubt and question myself and when I do, I think of this quote that Stephen Hawking (RIP) said, â€Å"So remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes a universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you dont give up.

The Evolution of IBM Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Evolution of IBM - Case Study Example The competencies thus shifted away from technical quality and towards knowledge, experience and personnel expertise (Carlson). The emphases was on focus, speed, customers, teamwork and execution. The company was centralized, global core processes were standardized, metrics were redesigned, and the focus was on the marketplace and the customer (Carlson). How would you describe Louis Gerstner’s implementation style of IBM’s competitive strategy in the early 1990s? The implementation style of IBM’s corporate strategy was focused upon streamlining the operation and cutting costs. IBM cut its workforce to a low of 220,000 employees in 1994, and used other cost reductions for the company. This was half of the competitive strategy. The other half was that Gerstner recognized that the company should continue to provide integrated solutions. The previous idea was that IBM would divide into separate companies that emphasized separate competencies. The idea was that IBM could bundle and customize solutions for customers, packaging hardware, software and services together in a customized bundle (Carlson). Because IBM was centered around an idea, as opposed to a certain technology, it was able to adapt to changing business climates that occur when new technologies arise, and the magazine The Economist states that companies who are rooted in a philosophy, not a product, are the companies who will be around in 100 years (â€Å"The Test of Time,â⠂¬ 2011). ... The company also dropped low margin industries, such as personal printers and hard drives. Its focus was on high profit margin businesses, with a focus on becoming a technology integrator. It also acquired the management consulting and technology services arm of Pricewaterhouse Cooper, which was a boon for its services division (Carlson). What are the implications of the globally integrated enterprise model for marketing managers in the Australia and New Zealand subsidiary of IBM? The implications are that, even though the New Zealand and Australian marketing managers are working for a subsidiary of IBM, they will have to adhere to the corporate ethos of IBM. Moreover, they will be controlled by the centralized unit of IBM, and the products and services that they will be producing will be products and services which are approved by centralized management at IBM. The values, processes and shared services will be those of IBM. It appears that IBM has abandoned the strategy of having parents and children in the corporate sense, and more that each of the offices around the world are a part of IBM, and not independent. Discuss the elements of the marketing strategy that makes IBM successful in today’s global marketplace. One of the important elements of the marketing strategy is that IBM integrates production and value delivery worldwide, while depending upon state borders less

Organization public health slp 1 - Essay Example (NCI, 2008) The estimated 2007 US colon cancer patient is roughly 112,340 men and 55,290 women. (American Cancer Society, 2007) In general, more 28,180 women have died from colon cancer as compared to 26,000 men. (National Cancer Institute, 2006) A person’s age, family history, personal medical history, diet, polyps or non-cancerous cells, ulcerative colitis, and lifestyle such as excessive smoking and alcohol consumption are the common risk factors related to the development of colon cancer. (NIH Senior Health, 2007; Zeller et al., 2006; Giovannucci & Brigham, 2001; Halvorsen et al., 1999) Lifestyle and diet significantly triggers the possibility of developing colon cancer. In line with this matter, a past study shows that there is a significant relationship between the reduction of folate intake and the increase in alcohol consumption with the increase risk for colon cancer. (Giovannucci et al., 1995) This is because of the fact that folate acts as the regulator of oncogene and tumor suppressor gene expression through the DNA methylation. Aside from allowing causing a free radical damage to the colon cells, excessive alcohol consumption reduces the folate that is store in the human body. (Wheeler, 2003) When colon cancer is detected, colorectal cancer care is treated with the use of chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy. (Dominitz et al., 1998) To minimize the number of death, there is a need for health care workers to assess the risk factors such as age in order to provide the patients with necessary treatment and care.
